1 Peter Verse Mapping

Verse Mapping is my favorite way to explore a verse! It is a combination of defining words, scripture cross-references and really allows for scripture to interpret scripture! Less of a chance of me possibly misinterpreting something!

Here is my verse mapping breakdown of 1 Peter 5:6 NIV:

Humble yourselves

  • adjective- not proud or arrogant, spirit of submission

  • Just before our verse it says this in 1 Peter 5:5,

"God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble."
  • Scripture cross-references:

  • Ephesians 4:2 "Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love."

  • Matthew 23:12 "For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

  • Philippians 2:3 "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,"

therefore

  • adverb- for that reason, because of that, on that ground

  • seems like an insignificant word, huh? But this word is a cue to pay attention to verses just before. So when we see this word in scripture, we are being told the reason for the instruction we are being given. I like knowing why, don't you?

under

  • adverb- to be covered // preposition- below or beneath so as to be covered, protected or concealed

God's mighty hand, that He may

  • Deuteronomy 5:15 "Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day."

  • Luke 22:69 "But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”

  • Isaiah 41:10 "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

  • So, I find this so very interesting! If the Son of Man (Jesus) is God's right hand man (you get it?!?!) then we are being told that if we humble ourselves, we will be covered, protected and concealed by Jesus!! God is SO AMAZING how He truly works all things together, even scripture cross-referencing other scripture, written by different people in different times, dealing with different issues, up against different enemies and challenges! Praise GOD for that!

lift you up

  • James 4:10 "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up." (guys, God is CONSISTENT!)

  • Psalm 91:12 & Luke 4:11 "they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone."

  • Psalm 123:11 "I lift up my eyes to you, to you who sit enthroned in heaven."

  • Exodus 9:16 "But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth."

in due time.

  • Deuteronomy 32:35 "It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them.”

  • Ecclesiastes 3:1-11 "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,

a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the

human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity

in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to

end."

The author of time and of all creation was there at the beginning, He was in your yesterdays, He is with you now and He has seen your tomorrows. What a comfort to know that He would not give us anything other than exactly what we need at exactly the right time. Our job is to stay in humility and reverence of who He is. He offered us His only Son to pay for our sins so that when God looks down at us, He sees His Son instead. I can rest knowing that humbling myself before God will result in only what is best for me, because that is what God wants for me!

I can lay all my plans for myself down at His feet because God will give me what I need when I need it, not one second too soon or too late. IN DUE TIME!

I can trust that His plans for my future and your future are good!

Happy Digging!
